Finally! Third-party covers for the New Kindle Paperwhite are starting to appear

Last week, Amazon began shipping the new version of the Kindle Paperwhite (the 10th Generation). If you are like me and don’t like the proprietary Amazon device covers, I have news. Some third-party covers are beginning to appear on Amazon. Quite a few covers have pooped up recently, Here’s a sampling:

A couple of caveats:

Note that Amazon Prime shipping may not be available for all of these covers. Many covers start off shipping from their manufacturer and later become available directly through Amazon.

The reviews for some of these covers are less than stellar. Due to Amazon’s confusing naming convention for their Kindles, it is unclear whether the poor fit reviews are due to buyer error or poor product design as there aren’t enough reviews for a true consensus. I recommend using caution when buying until there are more reviews.

Amazon introduces new Kindle Paperwhite e-reader

Amazon has made a new Kindle Paperwhite e-reader available for pre-order. The device will be released on November 7, 2018.

Features:

Here are the features of the new device:

  • The new device is thinner and lighter than the previous generation of Paperwhite. And, yes, that means a new size cover. According to the specs for the new cover, it will not fit any of the previous Paperwhites.
  • The new Paperwhite has more LEDs so it is brighter than the previous generation.
  • The screen is now flush with the bezel of the e-reader.
  • It’s waterproof:  IPX8 rated to protect against accidental immersion in up to two meters of fresh water for up to 60 minutes.
  • It’s got more storage: The basic version comes with 8 GB (twice the previous model). Or, you can choose 32 GB to hold more content. (This is a must if you are going to use the content for comics and audiobooks.)
  • Audible compatibility. Amazon had added Bluetooth so you can pair with headphones or speakers. The device is now Whispersync For Voice compatible, so you can not only sync across devices, but can switch back and forth between the ebook and Audible versions of a book.

The new Kindle Paperwhite also includes the ability to invert black and white text, allowing for nighttime reading with white text on a black background. That is one of my favorite features from the Kindle Oasis and it is exciting to see it available on the Paperwhite.

Covers:

Currently, Amazon has three covers available for the new device:

I will be on the look out for 3rd-party covers for this new model and will do a post as soon as new covers are available.

Bonuses:

  • Kindle Unlimited – Amazon is offering 6 months of Kindle Unlimited free with the purchase of a new Paperwhite. The Kindle Unlimited a subscription service that offers unlimited reading of books, magazines and audiobooks. Offer is only available after purchase and terms and conditions apply.
  • Trade in – Take advantage of Amazon’s trade in program and trade in your existing Kindle before you buy a new one. Besides a gift card for your old Kindle, you will get 25% off the purchase price of your new one. (And, yes, some Fire Tablets are eligible for trade in, too!)

The new Kindle Paperwhite prices start at $129.99 (only $10 more than the previous model). It is available in both Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + 4G LTE models. Complete specs are here.

So, what do you think? Are these new features worth an upgrade to you?

Third-party covers for the Kindle Oasis are here!

Not too long ago, I wrote a post on the bad reviews about the  Amazon-branded Kindle Oasis cover. Customers were also complaining on the Amazon forums about the poor performance of the expensive covers. But because the re-designed Oasis was so new, there were no third-party covers available with the launch of the new e-reader.

Thankfully, that situation has changed with new cases, sleeves and covers for the 2017 Oasis starting to show up on Amazon, including covers from long-time cover makers Moko and Fintie.

Clamshell cases:

Fintie Slim Case for Kindle Oasis (9th Generation, 2017 Release ONLY) – Ultra Thin Lightweight Smart Cover with Auto Wake / Sleep for Amazon All-New 7″ Kindle Oasis E-reader – various colors and designs

The MoKo Case for All-New Kindle Oasis (9th Generation, 2017 Release) – Premium Ultra Lightweight Shell Cover with Auto Wake / Sleep for Amazon Kindle Oasis E-reader Case – various colors and designs

Ratesell All-New Kindle Oasis (9th Generation, 2017 Release) Case – Slim Folding Stand Cover Case with Auto Wake & Sleep Function for Kindle Oasis E-reader 2017 – various colors and designs

Konglin Leather Cover Case for All-New Kindle Oasis (9th Generation,2017 Release Only) Tablet Premium Ultra Cover with Auto Wake / Sleep for Kindle Oasis E-readers – various colors

Sleeves:

If you prefer a sleeve rather than a case for your Oasis, several that have been designed for the new Oasis are available.

WALNEW 7″ Kindle Sleeve for Kindle Oasis 2017 Protective Insert Sleeve Case Bag Kindle Oasis 9th Generation Cover – various colors

ACdream All-New Kindle Oasis 2017 Sleeve, Protective Leather Tablet eReader Case bag for 7 Inch Kindle Oasis 2017 – various colors

Because people seems to be SO dissatisfied with the Amazon covers for the Oasis, these covers seem to be selling VERY quickly and their availability varies considerably (even from day to day). I am seeing some of these covers go back and forth between Prime shipping and third-party, which is not eligible for the free Prime shipping.

Also note that if you are searching for covers that fit the All-New Kindle Oasis E-reader,  they will say 9th generation, 7 inch or Kindle Oasis 2017 in the description.  Covers for the previous Oasis are listed as 2016 model, 6 inch or 8th generation.

Prices on the new cases seem to be averaging between $10.99 and $18.99.

I bought the Moko clamshell cover and am quite happy with it. (Review to follow shortly).

What about you? Have you been looking for a new cover for your 2017 Oasis?

Covers for the 2017 Oasis drown in poor reviews

When it was released, I bought myself the new 2017 Kindle Oasis e-reader. I did NOT buy the Amazon-branded cover and right now, I am feeling pretty happy with that decision. Both the leather and the fabric versions of the Amazon cover are getting extremely poor reviews from customers. The products are currently at a two-star average rating.

The main functional complaint about these covers is that the cover keeps sliding and falling off the device. Like the original Oasis, these only cover part of the device. Many customers are complaining that because of the new aluminum back on the device itself and weak magnets in the cover, the device offers little protection for the expensive Oasis.

There are also complaints stating that the covers are flimsy, poorly designed and over-priced for a product that costs $45 for fabric and $60 for leather.

Since the new Oasis is really slippery, it is a difficult device to use without a cover. I have a device bag, but for right now, I am refusing to take the device out of the house without a cover.

Several third-party covers are starting to crop up on Amazon, but none are sold by Amazon itself or available via Amazon Prime shipping. One of these does look interesting, however: The MoKo Case for All-New Kindle Oasis (9th Generation, 2017 Release) – Premium Ultra Lightweight Shell Cover with Auto Wake / Sleep for Amazon Kindle Oasis E-reader Case, BLACK. This is a clamshell case that is only available through a vendor that ships directly to the consumer and the delivery date is two weeks out with expedited shipping. MoKo makes a number of covers for Kindles and Fire tablets that are available on Amazon. I am predicting that this one will soon be available as well. I own several of the MoKo covers and have found them to be well made and to fit well.

Did you buy one of the new Oasis covers? What are your thoughts?

New e-reader resource page added

new_pageI just added a new page called New e-reader? Start here that has a collection of some of my most popular posts which are helpful if you have just gotten a new e-reader or tablet. The page contains links to articles with tips for new e-readers and tablets, covers and accessories, how to find free content, reviews of subscription services and special benefits and perks for Prime members and Kindle device owners. You can get to the page from the menu bar at the top of the page or by clicking here.

The page is a work in progress and I will be continuing to add to it.

Cases and Covers for the new Fire HD 8

fire_hd8_coverMy new Fire HD 8 is due to arrive on Wednesday and I haven’t bought a case for it yet. I prefer not to buy the Amazon cases, partly because of the cost (I like to change out cases). I had been checking the measurements of the 2015 devices and covers and comparing them to the new ones. The new Fire HD 8 is ever so slightly narrower and thinner, so I wasn’t sure the old cases would fit the new tablets.

Today, when I was looking at cases, Amazon flashed a warning on the product page that said “We want you to know: This product is not compatible with the All-New Fire HD 8 (2016 release). Explore compatible products.

Since we now know definitively that these 2015 model covers will NOT fit the new devices, for right now at least, the only covers available are by Amazon. The available Amazon cases are:

The Amazon covers will be available upon the Fire HD 8’s  release on September 21, 2016.

The good news is, there are other third party cases and covers on their way. Covers will soon be available from manufacturers like Fintie and MOKO. I have bought cases from both companies and been satisfied with them. Both offer decent quality budget cases that include Vegan leather options. Amazon currently has these cases available for pre-order, however, NONE OF THESE ARE CURRENTLY ELIGIBLE FOR PRIME SHIPPING. The cases are showing availability dates starting September 22 and prices start at $4.99 plus shipping. In the past, Amazon has add these covers to its inventory (and Prime shipping) fairly quickly. All cases that will fit the new Fire HD 8 are marked “All-New Amazon Fire HD 8 (6th Generation, 2016 release)”.

If you happen to need a case for the older Fire HD 8, you must search for accessories marked “Amazon Fire HD 8 Tablet (Fire 8″ HD Display 5th Generation – 2015 release)” to make sure you get the right sized item.

Pictured case is the Fintie Folio Case for All-New Amazon Fire HD 8 (6th Generation, 2016 release), Slim Fit Premium Vegan Leather Standing Cover for Fire HD 8 Tablet (2016 6th Gen Only), Starry Night.

E-Ink Kindles on sale now

paperwhite_newAs part of their Black Friday Deals week, Amazon has lowered prices on the basic Kindle, the Kindle Paperwhite and the Kindle for Kids bundle,

The basic touch Kindle,  normally $79.99, is only $49.99. This is $30 off the regular price.

The Kindle Paperwhite, normally, $119.99, is selling for $99.99. This is $20 off the regular price.

The Kindle for Kids Bundle, normally $99 is selling for $$69.99. The bundle includes the basic Kindle (without ads), a kid-friendly cover and a two year Square Trade warranty.

Special Black Friday pricing on the Kindles is good through November 30, 2015.

While not on sale, the more expensive  Voyage e-reader  is not on sale, but is available in as part of a special Kindle Voyage Essentials Bundle. That bundle includes a charger and leather cover for $249.97.

BTW, I am a huge advocate of using cases covers for Kindles to protect your investment. I have three cats and a dog. My Kindles have been dropped, knocked on the floor and pounced upon by my pets and they are all still safe and sound. You can find a cover for the basic Kindle for as little as $8.99. 🙂

More 2015 Fire 7 Covers and Cases

fire_7_casesWhen the new Fire 7 came out, I did this post on the available covers. These are for the 2015, 5th generation model. There were only a few styles available when the device first came out. We are now starting to see more cases and covers on the market. Since Amazon has announced that they will be selling the $50 device for only $35 as one of its Black Friday deals, I thought I would do another round-up post on some more of the new covers.

Oberon Design to allow pre-orders for new Kindle Covers

One of my Oberon Design Kindle covers

If you are as much of a fan of Oberon Design’s exquisite Kindle covers as I am,  then I have big news for you. For the first time, Oberon Design will allow pre-orders for their new Kindle (K4) covers.  Over the next few weeks, the site will add a pre-order page for the product. As yet, there has been no announcement regarding what designs and colors will be available.

You can also follow Oberon on both Twitter and Facebook for more information.

New York Times Kindle Covers

One of the things that is great about the new popularity of eBook readers is the ever-increasing number of accessories that are available.  The plethora of choices really allows an eReader owner to personalize their reader and express their own individual personality.

Today, I saw these new covers for the Kindle and absolutely fell in love! Made by Verso, each of the three covers features an image of New York City from the The New York Times Photo Archive.  The pictures included in the series are View from River House, The Flatiron Building and The Statue of Liberty (pictured). The Amazon page for each cover includes information about the photo.
