I am deliberately choosing not to talk about the Amazon – Hachette controversy. I am not without an opinion on the matter, but there is plenty of bias out there on both sides. The story is obviously receiving plenty of coverage….

Category change: News of the Day

I am renaming the News of the Day category to the Daily Links.

When I first envisioned the News of the Day category, I had intended to feature a few stories from the day with a brief commentary about them. I generally draft a post in the morning and add links as the day goes on. Due to other writing projects and time constraints, lately I haven’t always been able to get back to write the commentary and still post the links while the stories are still relevant. I feel the category change will more accurately reflect the actual content. 🙂

Kindle Fire HD 8.9 with 4G LTE on sale

Kindle FireToday, Amazon’s Deal of the Day is a Certified Refurbished Kindle Fire HD 8.9″ with 4G LTE coverage for $80 off. It comes in both 32GB and 64 GB versions. I believe these were unavailable new the last time I looked into buying one….

Several caveats here:

  • Be aware that this is a refurbished product, although Amazon does give the same return policy and one year warranty that comes with a new Kindle Fire tablet.
  • The network carrier for the 4G LTE coverage is ONLY available through AT & T.  If you want to add a tablet to another carrier, this is not the right one for you. Check the coverage map for AT & T here.
  • The $49.95 promotional data plan originally offered with these is NO LONGER AVAILABLE.  Current AT & T data plan rates apply.

New Category: Did You Know?

question markI get asked a lot for tips and tricks and how-to information, so I thought I would add a category where I could post small bits of information that wouldn’t normally be substantial or long enough for a traditional blog entry.

So, to start:

Did you know that your Kindle reads every book and document you put on it? It does this so that it can index every word and make them searchable. It does this even if you add the books yourself (a process called sideloading). The indexing process can take a while, especially if you add a large number of books. It really drains the battery, making it very important to keep your e-reader plugged in when you have just added new books. So don’t fill your e-reader right before a cruise or a long flight – otherwise, your battery may let you down. 😦

Dresden Files e-book on sale

dresdenIf you are a fan of urban fantasy, you might be interested in Amazon’s Deal of the Day today. Amazon is offering the first seven of Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files series for just $1.99 each. This is a great price; the books normally run much higher. The books are also on sale today at Barnes and Noble for the NOOK and at the Kobo store.

This is a delightful series if you enjoy the genre. Harry Dresden is Chicago’s only professional Wizard. I first watched TV series,  which led me to the books. Now, I always visualize Paul Blackthorne as Harry.  Personally, I find them especially delightful as I live in Northwest Indiana and am quite familiar with Chicago and the surrounding area. One of the books actually had a scene set in the city where I live!  🙂
