Amazon (Finally) Makes Announcement on Fire HD 8.9 deregister issue

fire_announcementAmazon has made an announcement about the deregistration and factory reset issue on the Kindle Help Community forum:

If you’re having trouble finding your photos, apps, or other content on your Kindle Fire HD 8.9”, please check your current registration status by swiping down from the top of the screen, selecting More, and then selecting My Account. If your device is not registered, tap the Register button and then enter your Amazon account information. After you register your device, you may need to download your content again. To learn more, go to

That link takes you to the Sync and Download Content to Your Kindle Fire page, There you will find instructions for syncing your content to your device:

To sync all content: With wireless connected, swipe down from the top of the screen to show Quick Settings, and then tap Sync.

The Sync Across Fire & Kindle Devices and Apps page implies that whether or not this restores bookmarks, highlights, etc.,  may depend on whether you have Whispersync enabled on your devices.

FYI: The Kindle Help Community forum is the one that is moderated by Amazon representatives.  It is not the same as the Amazon customer forums where customers comment and attempt to help other customers.

    I ran into the registration issue a few days ago, couldn’t get to my books or even my home page. Called Amazon for help, got none, but finally figured out that I had to re-register my kindle. Crazy and highly annoying.

  4. Hiya, thanks for this article, my mum has just had this on her Kindle Fire 7. It de-registered her. She has re-registered, she can find what she has bought ( mainly games that she has played for a couple of years now so you can imagine the levels she has reached!) but all of these have reset to level 1! Frustration does not come close to how she is presently feeling! Any advice you can offer is very much appreciated. I will keep checking back on this article for updates. Thanks again.

    • Did she try to sync the device? If your mom has tried syncing her Fire and the data is still not coming back, I would call Kindle support on Monday. Some people have gotten their data back and others have not. It may depend on her backup setting. Kindle Support should be tell for sure. Make sure you go through you call through the Kindle help page as the regular CS reps are not trained for the Kindle. Good luck with it! 🙂
