Is it Midnight at the Well of Souls?

Any Jack L. Chalker fans out there?

A chance conversation overheard on Twitter today referencing sentient plant life started me thinking about the Well World series and the Czill species. It also led me to a very strange description in this alien wiki that sure doesn’t jive with my recollection of the books. Time for a re-read.

That thought, of course,  led me to search to see any of these incredible books were available as ebooks. And to my surprise, they are! Baen Books has them available, and at reasonable prices, starting with Midnight at the Well of Souls…

Have you ever read this incredible science-fiction series?

I need help with a questionnaire

I would like to put together a directory of digital and digital friendly presses for the eBook Evangelist blog. I would also like to feature a publisher once a month for a more in-depth look.

I am currently putting together a questionnaire. Some of the questions are obvious (like niche, genre, territory, etc.). But I am also interested in things like why you formed your own press or knowing what unique point of view your company brings to the table.

So, what I would like to know is what questions would *you* like to be asked? And would you be interested in participating in the directory or an interview? Please let me know in the comments.

Ed McBain’s 87th Precinct Mysteries Available for Kindle

I was so excited to find out today that the Ed McBain 87th Precinct Mysteries are being made available for the Kindle.  Several of his books are available now and more will be out by the end of the month. The books are priced at $4.99. Paperbacks of the titles will be released in February. The books are being published by Amazon’s Thomas & Mercer imprint.

McBain is known as the father of the police procedural. For insight on McBain’s tremendous influence on writers such as Stephen King and J.A. Konrath, check out this Perspectives on Ed McBain page.  Pretty amazing stuff!

Whiners and Typos and Fears, Oh My: How publishers still don’t get it

There is a must-read article by Jon Evans on the Tech Crunch website today.  Entitled Dog Bites Man; Pope Condems Violence; Publishers Still Don’t Get It, this is an unbelievably astute commentary on some of the biggest issues affecting the publishing world today. (Hint: There’s nothing about dogs or the Pope in the article.)

Whatever you think about Amazon, it is increasingly apparent that Amazon “gets” what readers want. Say what you will about Jeff Bezos, but he is a reader and really does understand what readers want.

Kindle Fire, Touch ship early

Amazon announced that the Kindle Fire orders are shipping today, one day early. Many customers had expressed frustration on the Amazon forums that the device would first be available in stores like Best Buy on the 15th, yet customers who pre-ordered would not receive their Kindle Fires untill at least November 16th.

Amazon has also announced that the two Kindle Touch versions, the Kindle Touch and the Kindle Touch 3G, , are shipping on Tuesday, November 15th, six days early.

Some websites had already gotten early review devices and there were reviews up today on sites like MSNBC and Engadget. Look for a flood of reviews on the device over the next few days.
