2-day sale: Fire TV stick only $19 for Prime members

Fire TV stickIf you are an Amazon Prime member and have been thinking about trying one of the Fire TVs, Amazon may have a great deal for you. For two days only, Prime members can pick up the new Fire TV Stick for $19 – that’s $20 off the regular price of $39.

The stick comes with a remote control, but it is not voice-activated like the Fire TV Box. Instead, there is a downloadable app for voice control that can be used with the device, or you can purchase a voice-activated remote control separately. You can play games with the included remote control and it also supports the use of the optional Fire game controller.

There are some differences between the Fire TV Box and the stick. The Box has a Quad-core processor and 2 GB RAM The Fire stick is a Dual-core processor with 1 GB RAM. Both devices are wireless, but the Fire TV Box can also connect directly with an Ethernet cable.

I had personally held off on the Fire TV Box because I already own a Roku box and a Chromecast stick, both of which I use pretty much daily. Truthfully, when the Fire TV came out, I didn’t see much of a need for another streaming system. But for only $19, I am willing to give this one a try. 🙂

ETA: The Fire TV Stick  is a pre-order and will be released on  November 19th.

Fire Phone now 99 cents with two-year contract

amazon fire phoneThe Amazon Fire Phone has been reduced in price. It is now available for 99 cents with a two-year contract or for $449 for an outright purchase of the unlocked phone. The purchase includes a free one-year subscription to Amazon Prime. That’s a savings of $200 over the original price.

There have been a lot of rumors that the phone has not been selling well in the US, even among die-hard Amazon aficionados. The fact that this phone is only available for AT & T and the original sticker price of $649 for an unlocked version are the two most common reasons listed on the Amazon forums for passing on a purchase. I have also seen quite a few complaints about a lack of apps (and the Google Play store) for the phone.

40 Kindle Reads only $1.99 each

tree in brooklynToday only, there are 40 Kindle e-books  from HarperCollins on sale for only $1.99 each. There’s a nice variety in the selections.

Included in the available titles are two of my personal childhood favorites: Alas, Babylon, a post-apocalyptic thriller by Pat Frank and Betty Smith’s poignant coming of age story, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. (And, yes, I had eclectic tastes!)  Both of these books from the 1950s are now considered classics.

 

Kindle Fire HD 8.9 with 4G LTE on sale

Kindle FireToday, Amazon’s Deal of the Day is a Certified Refurbished Kindle Fire HD 8.9″ with 4G LTE coverage for $80 off. It comes in both 32GB and 64 GB versions. I believe these were unavailable new the last time I looked into buying one….

Several caveats here:

  • Be aware that this is a refurbished product, although Amazon does give the same return policy and one year warranty that comes with a new Kindle Fire tablet.
  • The network carrier for the 4G LTE coverage is ONLY available through AT & T.  If you want to add a tablet to another carrier, this is not the right one for you. Check the coverage map for AT & T here.
  • The $49.95 promotional data plan originally offered with these is NO LONGER AVAILABLE.  Current AT & T data plan rates apply.

Kindles on sale for $49

Basic KindleFor a limited time, Amazon has the basic Wi-fi Kindle with Special Offers  on sale for just $49. The Wi-fi Kindle Paperwhite with Special Offers  is on sale for $99. That’s a savings of $20 off the regular price.The Paperwhite without Special Offers is also on sale.

I own both of these and think that they are great devices. The ads are fairly unobtrusive (I actually like them better than the regular screensavers!). The Paperwhite has become the Kindle I use the most and with the built-in light for reading in bed (especially without disturbing your partner), it can’t be beat.

This is a great entry level price if you are thinking of trying the Kindle or if you want to take advantage of the many free books that are offered exclusively for the Kindle.

Cyber Monday Sale on Kindle Books

There are more than 900 titles on sale in today’s Cyber Monday Kindle Daily Deal . The sale includes some gems by authors such as Robert McCammon, Iris Murdoch, and Patricia Wentworth.  I just picked up McCammon’s Swan Song  and Ira Levin’s This Perfect Day for $2.99 each The books offered span a variety of genres and also a good selection of non-fiction books, including a variety of knitting books.

Today is the also the last day for the Kindle DX at the sale price of $259.

Kindle DX on Sale for Black Friday Week

Amazon has the large Kindle DX on sale from November 24th until the 28th for only $259. The device has a large 9.7 inch display and normally retails for $379. The DX has free 3G included, but does not have wi-fi.

Amazon generally does not put Kindles on sale. If you have been wanting a large Kindle for reading technical manuals and PDFs, this is a great deal and I suspect that these won’t last very long.

Nooks on sale

If you have been waiting for the price to be right on a Barnes and Noble Nook, now may be the right time to buy! There are some great bargains available.

Barnes and Noble is selling the Nook Touch (refurbished) for $79 on their website. The Nook 1 is selling new for only $89. You can also find the items, including manufacturer refurbished Nook Color eReaders, at  Barnes and Nobles’ eBay store.

Kindle DX on sale

Today’s Amazon Gold Box Deal is the large screen Kindle DX for only $299. It normally retails for $379.

The item raises a couple of interesting questions. Amazon never puts the Kindles on sale, so does this item mean that we are going to be seeing either a new Kindle DX or the much rumored Amazon Android Tablet soon? Kindle aficionados have noted that the DX hasn’t had any updates recently, another possible sign that Amazon is close to rolling out a new product. Most users think that it doesn’t handle fonts and PDFs as well as its Kindle 3G  counterpart. The DX is also not available in WiFi – a definite deal breaker for me, even though I would love the larger 9.7 inch display.

Literati eReader on sale

LiteratiBed Bath and Beyond currently has the Sharper Image Literati eReader on sale. The device is on sale for $39.99 in stores and online. The reader originally sold for $199 when it first came out.

The Literati is an entry level, color ereader with WiFi. It reads ePub, Doc, PDF, and txt files and is connected to the Kobo online bookstore. It is also capable of borrowing library books using the Adobe Digital Editions software.

The reviews on this are varied, with particular complaints about the WiFi and book upload functions. You can see some of the reviews at Good eReader and  CNET.  Here’s an interesting video review from a recent purchaser who picked up one for $50.

I am extremely happy with my Kindle.  I don’t currently borrow ebooks because the local libraries in my area are not yet making ebooks available, so that has not been an issue.  I would, however, be interesting in trying both a color device and one capable of borrowing books. For this price, I took the plunge and just ordered one for myself.
