Updated: Digital Book Day: Free e-books July 14, 2014

Digital Book DayMonday, July 14, 2014 (Bastille Day) is the first digital book day, according to DigitalBookDay.com. It is intended to be a “day to celebrate readers, stories, and the authors who create them.” The site is offering links to over 400 free books on hosted various sites. There is a wide range of genres represented:  historical, romance, science-fiction, fantasy, mystery, non-fiction, thrillers, and young adult. Represented are books from authors from around the world, including C.J. Lyons, Bob Mayer, Linda Welch and many, many more.

PLEASE NOTE:  The book links will not be live until July 14, 2014. Without being able to click through, it was not clear to me what format the free books are being offered in (mobi, epub or PDF).

There is also a link on the site to sign up to be notified of future free digital book events.

Update: The Digital Book Day site seems to be down. I am getting a database connection error.

Update 2: Evidently, the server crashed. There is a post here on Google plus where authors have been invited to post links to their free books. Authors are welcome to post links to their free books below in the comments.

Free! 130 e-books from Microsoft

Microsoft’s Eric Ligman has made more than 130 technical books free to download. Topics include: Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows 7, Office 2013, Office 365, Office 2010, SharePoint 2013, Dynamics CRM, PowerShell, Exchange Server, Lync 2013, System Center, Azure, Cloud, SQL Server and more.  The books are in various formats:  mostly PDFs but there are EPUB, MOBI and DOCX as well.

Fair warning: these downloads seem pretty popular. You may encounter a slow server.

40 Kindle Reads only $1.99 each

tree in brooklynToday only, there are 40 Kindle e-books  from HarperCollins on sale for only $1.99 each. There’s a nice variety in the selections.

Included in the available titles are two of my personal childhood favorites: Alas, Babylon, a post-apocalyptic thriller by Pat Frank and Betty Smith’s poignant coming of age story, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. (And, yes, I had eclectic tastes!)  Both of these books from the 1950s are now considered classics.

Dresden Files e-book on sale

dresdenIf you are a fan of urban fantasy, you might be interested in Amazon’s Deal of the Day today. Amazon is offering the first seven of Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files series for just $1.99 each. This is a great price; the books normally run much higher. The books are also on sale today at Barnes and Noble for the NOOK and at the Kobo store.

This is a delightful series if you enjoy the genre. Harry Dresden is Chicago’s only professional Wizard. I first watched TV series,  which led me to the books. Now, I always visualize Paul Blackthorne as Harry.  Personally, I find them especially delightful as I live in Northwest Indiana and am quite familiar with Chicago and the surrounding area. One of the books actually had a scene set in the city where I live!  🙂

Happy Mother’s Day to my Kindle

Kindle 1Okay, who is this crazy lady and why is she wishing her Kindle a happy Mother’s Day?

Well, the truth is that for me, the Kindle and Mother’s Day are linked together in my mind. I received my first Kindle, what’s now called the Kindle 1, for Mother’s Day 2008. That makes six years of the magic of reading e-books for me. I still have my original Kindle – and it still works! Since then, I have owned most of the e-ink Kindle models and several Kindle Fires (with a couple of NOOKs thrown in, to boot). At this point, I could not imagine not having an e-reader to read on.

Since I am waxing nostalgic about my Kindles today, I was thrilled to see this article on The Goodereader on The History of the Kindle in Pictures. Take a look; it is a fascinating look at the changes in model styles over the past six years.
