E-reader makes it to the dictionary…

According to this article,  Merriam-Webster added the word e-reader to their dictionary. Now, before you get all excited, thing about this: That also means there is now a proper and right way to spell it! No more make-up-your-own-mind choices like ereader or eReader.

Now, college professors, bosses and newspaper editors are all going to insist that the word is spelled correctly. And, horror of horrors, my blog tags and categories are no longer correct.

And here I was, hoping for a hyphen-free spelling solution….

DOJ files suit against Apple, Big Five

As has been hinted at for weeks, the Department of Justice has filed a civil suit against Apple and the so-called “Big Five” publishers: Hachette SA, HarperCollins, Macmillan, Penguin and Simon & Schuster.  Random House did not initially sign on to the ageny model, so it is not a part of the U.S. lawsuit. The DOJ has alleged collusion and price-fixing over the agency pricing model. Here’s a link to the DOJ filing. The level of detail in the filing is amazing and very muh at odds with rumors that the DOJ “had no evidence of any wrongdoing.”

According to this article from Bloomberg, Hachette, Simon & Shuster, and Harper Collins are rumored to have settled with the DOJ. The article further states that Penguin intends to fight.

In Macmillan’s response, CEO John Sargent says that they will fight the suit.

Ed McBain 87th Precinct mysteries only 99 cents

I actually had quite a bit of interest in my blog entry announcing that Ed McBain’s books are now available for the Kindle. Well, today only, all 35 titles of the Ed McBain 87th Precinct mysteries are on sale for only 99 cents each! Normally, these are $4.99 each.

The deal ends tonight at midnight, PST.

I think I am going to buy them all…

Rumor Mill: Is Barnes and Noble selling off the NOOK?

Yesterday, Barnes & Noble announced that they were exploring the idea of selling off the NOOK side of their business.  Today, B & N CEO William Lynch talks about that possibility. There’s more at PaidContent, including video of Lynch on CNBC. Note the use of the words possibility, considering and may in these articles….

Did Jeff Bezos say millions?

Amazon released a statement announcing the Q3 earnings today. Net sales were up 44% to 10.88 billion dollars.

From the press release:

“September 28th was the biggest order day ever for Kindle, even bigger than previous holiday peak days – we introduced Kindle Fire for $199, Kindle Touch 3G for $149, Kindle Touch for $99, and our all new Kindle for only $79,” said Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon.com. “In the three weeks since launch, orders for electronic ink Kindles are double the previous launch. And based on what we’re seeing with Kindle Fire pre-orders, we’re increasing capacity and building millions more than we’d already planned.”  [Emphasis added]

“Millions,” he said. That’s a lot of tablets. Already the rumors are starting that the Kindle Fire will outsell the iPad 2. And don’t forget the huge sales of the new Kindles.

But, ironically, investors weren’t happy because net sales were predicted to reach 10.95 billion – and didn’t. I guess you really can’t please everybody.

Is the Kindle 4 coming to Australia and beyond?

A reader on the Amazon message boards shared this link to an ad from Australian retailer Big W advertising a Kindle pre-order shipping on November, 7, 2011. I have also heard that it can be ordered from the Dick Smith stores in Australia.

Because it is international, this version is the same as the $109 Basic Kindle – there are no special offers. Also note that it is not the Touch version.

Does this mean that the rest of the world is probably not far behind?

(International users should check the Kindle page. I had heard that there are international landing pages for the basic Kindle available now, but since I am accessing the site from within the US, I can’t see them….)
